Bit Defender Internet Security Suite - User Review
BitDefender 9 Standard was ranked "top antivirus software" by PC Magazine in 2006, and BitDefender Antivirus later won PC World's "best buy" award, beating out some tough competition.
I am always on the lookout for excellent antivirus and anti spyware products, so I downloaded a trial version of Bit Defender Internet Security 10 to see for myself just how good this product is.
I like to use internet security suites, as opposed to just antivirus, antispyware, anti spam, etc... Although you can get much better protection if you "pick and choose" each type of computer security software from different vendors - getting the "best of the best", I find it much easier to keep up with a computer security suite. For one thing, buying an internet security suite is cheaper than buying individual products.
So, with my new BitDefender Internet Security Suite in hand, I proceed to install it. I've tested a lot of security suites, and although Bit Defender installed with no problems, I give it an 8 out of 10 for "ease of installation".
The installation wizard is not as intuitive and easy to understand as I'd hoped it would be. Although I had no difficulty with it, some of the terminology was a bit "vague", and could be confusing to novices.
As like all other computer security suites, BitDefender ran an antivirus update after installation and then scanned my system for spyware and viruses (it found none, thank goodness). I have a 40 GB hard drive, and the scanning took about 15 minutes to complete - not bad!
With Bit Defender Internet Security up and running, I noticed a slight "drag" on my system, but not as much as with Panda Internet Security or F-Secure Internet Security. All internet security suites will cause your computer to slow down a bit, especially during startup. This is because of the scanning that is going on "behind the scenes", ensuring that your operating system files are "clean".
If you use an internet security suite and you're running Windows XP, you should have at least 512 MB of RAM installed to ensure decent performance.
Like all "top of the line" internet security products, BitDefender defaults to "automatic updates", which is the best way to stay safe online. Unlike a lot of security products however, Bit Defender updates occur every hour; ensuring you always have the most recent protection available. This is important because new variations of viruses and spyware are introduced onto the internet every day, and you never know when you'll come across some destructive new form of malware.
The BitDefender interface is very clean and easy to use, and the default view tells you your current update status - which is a critical thing to know. It's easy to toggle between settings for antivirus, firewall, antispam, antispyware, and parental controls, and even beginning users can easily make adjustments to the various sensitivity settings for each. The personal firewall settings show a "real time" graph of incoming and outgoing network activity, which I find comforting.
Although I'm not using the parental controls, it is possible to set up multiple user profiles with Bit Defender Internet Security. You can assign a profile to each child, and control the type of websites that can be accessed, the times internet is available, and even block websites that contain certain "keywords" you don't want your children exposed to.
I'm very happy with Bit Defender Internet Security, and have since purchased a 2 year license for both my laptop and my PC.

Webroot has introduced its Phileas system that automates spyware research using automatic Internet crawling searching for malicious spyware programs.
Phileas' purpose is to detect spyware programs before they reach unaware PC users that surf the Internet.
Phileas crawls the Web and updates the threat database automatically by contacting Webroot's central unit. Data is being gathered via bot network that sends results to Webroot for processing.
Phileas can detect malicious code and exploits. Bots scan Web sites for forged URLs, manipulated scripts and for suspicious applications.
The bot network identifies known threats and forwards information about unknown suspicious programs for processing to Webroot. This data is being used to create spyware definitions.
Webroot's application is collecting gathering data related to exploits and malicious code that are being used to transport spyware on the Internet and about the spyware's originator.
Historically, anti-spyware vendors had relied on the Internet user community's reports about new spyware. Phileas relies on a proactive approach that aims at collecting research data and information about new flaws and exploits by actively scanning the Web for potentially malicious code.

How To Protect Your Computer Against Spyware and Adware
Has your computer been acting stragenly lately?Lets face it, about 95% of people who actively surf the internet have computers which are infected by spyware.So what is spyware and how does it get into your computer system.Spyware is constantly spreading and is
infecting lots more computers every single day. So what is it? Spyware programs come in
many different shapes and sizes but all have a couple of things in common. Spyware infects your computer while you surf the internet without you even knowing about it,spyware can also gain access to and send your personal information from your computer to other computers without you even knowing, and apart from the fact that it can be VERY difficult to find, trying to uninstall or disable it successfully can be a mission.
Lets have a look at some methods of how spyware can infect your computer as well as the common symptoms.
1. An Email Disguised as an innocent file or some form of attachment. Once you open the email it goes to work by infecting your computer.
2. Website- Passed via your browser by bad websites. Once again disguised as an innocent download of some sort. Once the download is installed and run, you are already infected. Some websites are also able to use cookies which they use to track your movement when surfing from website to website.Despite this, do not become too worried and block all your cookies. Some websites do use cookies for legitimate reasons.
3.Sometimes spyware can be bundled together with other programs without your knowledge.
Symptoms of spyware include:
1.Your Home Page - The Changing your of browsers default home page is a common symptom used by many spyware programs. So if your home page suddenly changes to a diferrent homepage automatically then you might be infected with Spyware.
2. Sometimes strange new websites pop up in your favorites. This is also a common symptom as a result of spyware programs. The occurance that certain websites often come back when your computer restarts even if deleted can be another trick of spyware programs.
3.Very slow computer - You should check if your computer is running slower than usual. A lot of spyware programs use a lot of your computers memory to run.So If you notice that your computer is chugging along,once again odds are that it is most likely infected with spyware.
4.Lots of pop up adverts. If you suddenly start receiving more pop up adverts than normal, you might have a problem. Spyware programs can also be used to serve popup ads while you browse the internet,or even only when your internet connection is on. Most are adult website type pop ups while others may appear to come from harmless site.
