Internet Marketing - A Few Tips on Hosting

For the third in our series of articles on "Getting Started" in the Internet marketing business, I'd like to talk about getting a web hosting company. Having your own web host is unavoidable for those who want to work in Internet marketing. Not setting up your own site could work against you.

It's true that you can rely on affiliate pages to conduct business, but they make sales harder because of all the people promoting the same page. So, if you're going to do that, it's better to front the affiliate page with a splash page or a squeeze page and then drive traffic to the affiliate account. The same goes for blogging. Blogs have become important to Internet marketing and when you use a free one, you can't customize it just the way you need or want it to be.

But the worst kind of free hosting for Internet marketing purposes is the kind you get from Tripod, Angelfire, or Netfirms. Those are good for personal web pages, but not for business. They usually have an ad bar or a pop-up on the screen and those things will just destroy credibility. Nobody will take you seriously, if you're trying to do business with a free website.

You have to pay a monthly subscription to a web hosting service. Just be careful about which package you choose. At some hosting companies, for instance, they give you a free blog. Only problem is that you can't add any plug-ins and you're stuck with the themes they allow. You really can't do much customization at all. But if you get cPanel hosting or Plesk with Fantastico, installing a WordPress blog on your own server is very simple. Then, you can take advantage of all the great Word Press plug-ins and tons and tons of very cool themes.

Though this may not seem like a huge deal to you now, it will be in the future. You also need to consider what your business model will be and how much bandwidth you'll need. If you anticipate tons of traffic---if you're running any kind of free traffic program, for instance---you'll need more bandwidth. But generally just for putting up some squeeze pages and a blog, you'll have all the room you need for about $10 a month.

You still need to consider all the options. Choosing the right web hosting company is very important in Internet marketing, and can be the difference between you succeeding and you failing. A reliable company with almost 100% uptime that has caring support is what you're looking for. In Internet marketing, having your website down when you're trying to make money can be a disaster.
