VoIP Providers - Choosing the Right One

VoIP, which is also known as Voice Over Internet Protocol technology, is a very quickly expanding area of voice communications. How do you go about choosing a provider for this form of communication? Let's take a look.

There are so many options and packages available, which one should you pick? They all look so appealing. Well step back, take a few minutes and determine what your needs are, research companies, read reviews, look for services available in your area and find out what they have to offer. It all seems a bit overwhelming, but if you break it down into smaller pieces, you will be able to find the perfect provider. Initially, we all think of cost. This is definitely a factor to consider. Prices for services can range from dirt cheap to mid range. Just keep in mind what this price covers. The really cheap ones may not offer add on services, such as, call waiting, call forwarding, and voice mail. Some may not allow you to make calls outside the area. Check to see if there is a charge for long distance and international calls and exactly what that fee is.

Basically, make sure you know what is included in the price. It may make more sense to go with a higher priced plan, since you may get more of a bang for your buck out of it. The lower priced plan with all the added on costs may cost you more in the long run.

If this is the only phone system you will be using, make sure your provider has the ability to contact emergency services. This would require E911 access. It may be something you may need one day and one feature you may not want to be without. Why take a chance when safety is involved?

You really must read the contract carefully. It is important to know what exactly is in it, and what it means. Some providers have a lock in period, which means you would be unable to change to a different provider or a different plan during a certain period of time. Find out about service charges and if the provider offers money back testing periods, in case you aren't satisfied. Also determine if technical support is available to the users.

Make sure your existing system and Internet cable is compatible with the provider. Know the different hardware and software requirements to establish VoIP with the provider. Also research the technology they use and find out what future plans they have in it. In addition, find out if you can keep your current phone number. You may not want to keep changing it if you decide to leave the provider.

This is the time to look for special promotions. Search for each provider's special deals and features. See if you can benefit from any of them.

These are some of the important points to consider when choosing a VoIP provider. By taking all of this into consideration you should be able to make a knowledgeable choice, providing you with a service compatible with your system, containing the features which are important to you and at a price you can afford.
